ABSTRACT
Empathy
Emotion is the thing. We understand that a real human is acting out raw emotions, and we feel it with them. Part of the audience just wants to hear the voices; most of it can tell. And the label is coming either way: the big platforms mark AI-made content. So the gap does not close when the pixels get better. It closes only when the person is real.
Star power
We like stars. We watch a show because of a recognizable face and a great performance. When it is not truly them, the star power diminishes, and so does the big production built around it.
What a dub keeps
Human to human, not AI to AI.
A dub holds everything constant: the person, the performance, the scene, the music. Only the language changes. That is why we built a decision model and not a video model: who on screen is saying the line, the emotion from a whisper to a yell, which name or brand stays as it is, what the text in the frame says. Nothing is made up. It is carried over.
AI-made content, with effort
There will be AI-assisted content and AI-made content, and some of it will be made with real effort. That content still needs a dub. A general model can't re-run the same scene in a new language with the right person speaking, the laughter and the music intact and the text on screen replaced. And translation is where even the best general models fall down on their own: a joke that doesn't carry, a name that gets translated, a slang word with a bad meaning in the new language, a topic that culture avoids. Low-effort content won't be worth dubbing; it will simply be remade per culture. That is fine. We are not for it.
Two lanes
The fast lane: upload once and take what comes out, no control, a translation you can't review. The quality lane: the person, the performance and the scene held, every decision recorded and yours to override, in one shot. We chose the second lane on purpose.
One shot today means giving up the rest.

Why the quality lane compounds
Every title adds to the record: what that culture avoids, which slang turns bad, how far the profanity goes, the right terms, how a joke carries. A choice made once follows the next episode. General video models can generate in a language long before they can localize into it; we work in 30 languages, and the nuance accumulates. That is the lane.
QUESTIONS, ANSWERED
Is Familiar against AI-made content?
No. Content made with effort, AI-assisted or not, still needs a dub, and it gets the same one: the person, the performance and the scene held, only the language changed.
Why not just remake a title per language?
A general model can't re-run the same scene with the right person speaking, the laughter and the music intact and the text on screen replaced, and the translation is where it falls down first. A dub carries what is already there.
What about a performer who has passed?
Their own recorded performances are the rights holder's to localize. Their likeness in a new project is something they never consented to, and Familiar does not do it.
Multimodal Translation
Familiar Labs builds generationally better dubbing with a Multimodal Localization Decision Model (MLDM), the first foundation model for multimodal translation: one model decides what to localize across text, audio and visual, and shows you the choices. Your voice and lips, carried into new languages. They're a team of 8 with PhDs, backed by Samsung, RedBird, Gold House. Our mission
